Containerized SVE System
West Deptford, New Jersey
Fliteway designed, engineered, and fabricated a fully containerized soil vapor extraction treatment system with custom control panels, motor control center, and PLC-based automation for a petroleum remediation site in New Jersey.
The Challenge
A global environmental consulting firm required the design and fabrication of a containerized SVE system for a petroleum remediation site in West Deptford, New Jersey, managed on behalf of a major petroleum end-user. The project scope extended well beyond standard equipment fabrication — it demanded custom control logic design, motor control fabrication, pre-construction engineering submittals, and full mechanical arrangement drawings.
The system needed to be entirely self-contained within a CONEX shipping container for efficient transportation and rapid on-site deployment. All electrical, controls, and mechanical components had to be fully integrated and tested at the factory prior to shipment. The client also required detailed engineering documentation packages for their own review and approval process before fabrication could proceed.
The Solution
Fliteway provided a comprehensive design-build solution that encompassed the full engineering lifecycle. The project began with mechanical arrangement drawings, process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), electrical single-line diagrams, and control logic narratives — all submitted to the consulting firm for review and approval before fabrication commenced.
The treatment system itself was built around an SVE treatment train sized for the site-specific vapor extraction requirements. Fliteway fabricated a custom control panel featuring a programmable logic controller (PLC) for automated system operation, a motor control center (MCC) with variable frequency drives (VFDs) for blower speed control, and a human-machine interface (HMI) for local operator interaction.
The motor control center was designed and built to manage all electrical loads within the containerized system, including blower motors, transfer pumps, heaters, and auxiliary equipment. VFDs allowed the operators to optimize blower performance based on real-time extraction conditions, reducing energy consumption while maintaining target vacuum levels across the extraction well network.
All components were mounted, piped, wired, and tested inside the CONEX container at Fliteway's Cudahy, Wisconsin facility. Factory acceptance testing (FAT) confirmed proper operation of all controls, interlocks, alarms, and safety shutdowns before the system was released for shipment to New Jersey.
Results
The complete containerized SVE system was delivered to the West Deptford site ready for installation and commissioning. The CONEX-mounted design reduced on-site construction time and eliminated the need for a dedicated equipment building, lowering both project cost and schedule risk.
The custom PLC controls and VFD-driven blowers provided the operational flexibility needed for varying site conditions, while the pre-approved engineering documentation package ensured alignment between Fliteway's fabrication and the consulting firm's project specifications.
Technical Details
Control Panel Fabrication
The custom control panel was designed and fabricated to house the PLC processor, I/O modules, power distribution, relay logic, and operator interface components. The panel was built to NEMA standards appropriate for the installation environment and included labeled terminal blocks, wire management, and UL-listed components throughout.
Motor Control Center
The MCC provided centralized motor starting, overload protection, and variable frequency drive integration for the primary vacuum blower and auxiliary motors. Circuit breakers, contactors, and VFDs were coordinated for selective protection and efficient power management within the container's electrical distribution system.
PLC Programming & Control Logic
PLC programming included automated startup/shutdown sequences, interlock logic for safety systems, alarm management, and data logging. The control logic was documented in a detailed narrative and reviewed by the consulting firm's engineering team prior to programming and commissioning.
Mechanical & Electrical Design
Full mechanical arrangement drawings defined the equipment layout within the CONEX container, including blower positioning, piping runs, access clearances, and ventilation. Electrical design included single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, conduit routing, and grounding details compliant with NEC requirements.
