Superfund SVE System Fabrication
Bandera Road — San Antonio, Texas
Fliteway designed and fabricated a complete soil vapor extraction treatment system for a competitive-bid EPA Superfund remediation project in San Antonio, Texas.
The Challenge
An environmental consulting firm was managing the remediation of an EPA-designated Superfund site in San Antonio, Texas. The site required a soil vapor extraction system to address volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination in the subsurface. Because this was a federally funded Superfund project, the procurement process demanded strict compliance with federal bidding standards, detailed technical submittals, and competitive pricing.
The SVE treatment system needed to handle variable vapor flow rates, fluctuating contaminant concentrations, and Texas-climate operating conditions. Regulatory oversight required comprehensive emissions compliance monitoring and documentation. The project also called for ongoing operations, maintenance, and equipment rental support spanning multiple years after initial system deployment.
The Solution
Fliteway provided a complete SVE treatment system designed for the site-specific conditions at the Superfund location. The system included industrial-grade vacuum blowers sized for the required extraction flow rates, a vapor-phase granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment train for VOC removal, moisture separators to protect downstream equipment, and a full process piping and controls package.
The entire treatment system was fabricated in a containerized (CONEX-based) configuration at Fliteway's manufacturing facility in Cudahy, Wisconsin. Containerization allowed for factory testing, quality control, and rapid deployment once delivered to the Texas site. All electrical and controls were pre-wired and tested before shipment.
Following system delivery and commissioning, Fliteway provided multi-year operations and maintenance support. This included routine system inspections, GAC media changeouts, blower maintenance, compliance monitoring, and performance reporting to support the overall site remediation objectives.
Results
The SVE treatment system was fabricated and delivered on schedule, meeting all Superfund procurement requirements and federal compliance standards. Containerized construction reduced on-site installation time and minimized disruption at the active remediation site.
Multi-year O&M support ensured continuous system operation and regulatory compliance throughout the remediation period. The vapor-phase GAC treatment consistently met discharge requirements for VOC removal, and routine maintenance kept system availability high across multiple operating seasons in the San Antonio climate.
Technical Details
SVE Treatment Train
The multi-component SVE treatment train was engineered to handle variable vapor flow conditions typical of Superfund remediation sites. The system progresses extracted vapors through moisture separation, particulate filtration, and vapor-phase granular activated carbon adsorption to achieve compliant discharge.
Vacuum Blower System
Industrial vacuum blowers were selected and sized for the site-specific extraction requirements, accounting for wellhead vacuum levels, piping friction losses, and the required airflow rates. The blower package included inlet silencers, relief valves, and vibration isolation mounts.
Vapor-Phase GAC Treatment
The granular activated carbon vessels were configured in a lead-lag arrangement to maximize carbon utilization and ensure continuous VOC removal during media changeouts. Sampling ports between vessels allowed breakthrough monitoring and optimized changeout scheduling.
Compliance Monitoring
Regulatory compliance monitoring instrumentation was integrated into the system, including flow measurement, pressure gauges, temperature sensors, and sampling ports for routine air quality testing. All monitoring data was documented for Superfund reporting requirements.
